Gazetteer and Bibliography of the
Mines and Quarries of North Wales

Introduction

This web site provides an on-line searchable version of Jeremy Wilkinson’s Gazetteer and Bibliography of the Mines and Quarries of North Wales. The gazetteer contains entries for more than 4,600 mine names and the bibliography has over 34,000 references and notes. Details are provided of around 800 limited companies and more than 3,500 other companies and individuals are named.

The Gazetteer and Bibliography was compiled over a considerable number of years by Jeremy Wilkinson from Public Record Office and other public record sources. He used the data and a set of BASIC programs to create a database, initially on a BBC B computer and later on PCs.

Jeremy has provided copies of his files to me, Dave Linton. I have modified file names, formats and some data codings to simplify maintenance and reduce file sizes. Duplicated data have been eliminated and minor corrections have been made. The files and their data formats have been documented to support future maintenance.

I have used my versions of Jeremy’s files and my own programs to produce an on-line search facility and down-loadable listings of all mines and quarries, persons associated with the mines and quarries, and a list of relevant Crown Grants.

Currently, no major changes have been made to Jeremy’s data. However, additions and corrections are incorporated as further information becomes available. Submissions of such information will be welcomed.

The Gazetteer and Bibliography

The Gazetteer and Bibliography consists of an entry for each mine and quarry in the pre-1974 counties of Angelsey, Caernarfonshire, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Merioneth of north Wales. Each entry has, where available, the following information:

• Name of the mine or quarry
• Product (gold, slate etc.)
• Parish
• County (pre-1974)
• National Grid Reference
• List of bibliographical references
• List of persons, companies and organisations associated with the mine or quarry together with details of their roles (owner, agent etc.) and the years they acted in these roles, and a specific bibliographical reference for each role recorded

Crown Grants

There is also a list of Crown Grants with, again where available, the following information:

• Date of Grant
• Grant type (take note, lease etc.)
• Name(s) of grantee(s) (i.e. the party(ies) to whom the grant was made)
• Mineral involved (gold, slate etc.) or other subject matter (e.g. tramway wayleave)
• County (pre-1974)
• Parish(es)
• PRO reference
• Notes

List of Persons, Companies and Organisations

Finally, there is an alphabetical list of persons, companies and organisations who were associated with the mines and quarries or who were Crown Grantees. It contains the following information:

• Name of person, company or organisation
• In the case of limited companies, the year of incorporation, last year and PRO reference
• List of roles (owner, agent etc.) and the years they acted in these roles, and a specific bibliographical reference for each role recorded
• List of Crown Grants including, where applicable, any co-grantees
