He appears to have been a miner for most of his life being variously mentioned as a lead miner (out of employment) [1871 census, Trelawnydd], lead miner [1881 census, Trelawnydd], coal miner at Llanbedr [1888 marriage certificate], manganese(?) miner [1891 census, Llanbedr], coal miner [son’s birth certificate, Llanbedr], manganese miner [death certificate 1920] and gold miner [son’s marriage certificate].
